DIANE MITCHELL: "MY HUSBAND DIED ASKING FOR HELP"

Name: Diane Mitchell
Age at incident: 44
Family killed: Husband (James Mitchell, age 47)
Current status: Advocate for massacre victims' families, protected zone resident

TESTIMONY (Recorded October 2057)

"James and I were traveling together to see our son who lived in Zone 14. We had all our paperwork. Everything was in order. We'd done this crossing three times before without problems.

But this time, Inspector Jean was there. She looked at our permits and said they were 'suspicious.' We asked what was suspicious about them. She wouldn't say. Just denied us and told us to leave.

James asked if we could speak to her supervisor. He was polite. Calm. He just wanted to understand what we needed to fix. Jean told him 'There is no appeal. Leave now.'

That's when the situation escalated. Thomas Chen's wife was crying. Their daughter was sick. People were confused and scared. James turned to me and said 'Something's wrong here. We should go.'

He was reaching for my hand when the shooting started.

James was hit in the chest. He fell backward. I dropped next to him, screaming for help. He was trying to speak but couldn't. Blood everywhere. I held him while he died. It took less than a minute.

The last thing he did was squeeze my hand. Then he was gone.

I'm still here because I need people to know what happened. James died for nothing. Nineteen people died for nothing. Isabella Jean murdered them because they asked questions. That's all. They asked questions and she killed them for it."
