MARCUS DAVIS: "I THREW MYSELF OVER MY CHILDREN"

Name: Marcus Davis
Age at incident: 35
Family: Two children (both survived), wife (survived)
Current status: Undisclosed location, left protected zones permanently

TESTIMONY (Recorded July 2057)

"When the shooting started, my only thought was protecting my kids. My son was 9, my daughter was 6. They were terrified, screaming, didn't understand what was happening.

I grabbed both of them and ran back toward the approach road. Bullets were hitting the ground around us. I could hear them. That sound - you never forget it. My son was screaming 'Dad, Dad!' I just kept running.

We made it maybe thirty feet before I threw myself over both kids. Covered them with my body. Prayed the bullets wouldn't hit them. Prayed if anyone got shot, it would be me, not them.

When the shooting stopped, I looked back. Bodies everywhere. So many bodies. Families we'd been talking to minutes before. Dead.

My kids saw all of it. My daughter has nightmares. My son doesn't trust anyone in uniform anymore. They're traumatized. We all are.

I'll never go through a checkpoint again. I don't care what the Authority says. I won't risk my family's lives on the whim of another inspector like Isabella Jean. We're gone. We'll survive in the Belt or die trying, but we'll never trust the Authority again."
